I don’t mean to brag, but spreadsheets are kind of my thing. I cut my teeth in banking and consulting, where I made all kinds of spreadsheets for all types of clients. After several friends asked for registry suggestions, I decided to draw on my experience of raising two babies and create the ultimate baby registry checklist!

What makes a good excel template?

If there’s anything I learned about excel models, it’s that there is no such one-size-fits-all solution. Each spreadsheet is structured based on each user’s preferences, available information, and the way their brain works.

With that, there are universal factors that determine whether a template is good:

Simple
- Complex spreadsheets reduce user-friendliness. It’s actually difficult to refine a template down to only the most essential, value-added components.
Intuitive structure
- A spreadsheet’s structure should have a logical flow, e.g. Ordering of product characteristics.
Flexible
- Allows the user to customize easily without risk of messing up the sheet.

I can use excel, why do I need yours?

The average baby registry has 120+ items on it. Assuming you are a new parent, you will probably need to research every product category, because you don’t want to be stuck with an inferior product when you need it most and can’t return.

Let’s assume, unrealistically, that you spend only 5 minutes researching each item. That’s 120 items x 5 minutes per item = 10 HOURS. Maybe you are about to find out, but practically NO ONE makes a stroller buying decision in 5 minutes.

Of the 120 items, at least 5 items will be over $100+: Stroller, car seat, crib, high chair, baby camera. There are tons of articles dedicated to helping people with these buying decisions due to their high cost, so these won’t be 5 minutes decisions.
